WHS Hierarchy of Control Measures In Six Easy Steps

Work Health and Safety (WHS) is one of the most important considerations facing any business today particularly those using mobile plant (Forklifts & Order Pickers Turret Trucks etc).

1.Risk Assessments should be conducted regularly in your workplace for potential hotspots in regards to accidents and near misses.

2.Assessments are best done whilst your operators perform their normal everyday duties.

3.Evaluation of all the possible injuries which may result from each possible accident should be thoroughly investigated  and control measures implemented to greatly minimize accidents happening or re-occurring again.

4.The chart of hierarchy of control measures is the perfect tool for showing everyone the proper safety steps from 1 to 6. The order is most important as the first step is the most effective and descends to the least effective.

5.If it is not possible to use the first step only then do you consider the other steps.

6.The Hierarchy of Control steps are:
  1. Elimination: if possible, remove the Danger (Hazards)
  2. Substitution: use safer methods if  removal is not a viable option
  3. Isolation : stop all access to the danger area completely
  4. Engineering control measures: change equipment and use tools to make safe
  5. Administrative practices: reduce the workers time exposed to hazards, use training and job rotation to name a couple.
  6. PPE: use personal protective equipment only as your last option.
